Carved on the base of The Statue of Liberty are these words:
Even these, "the least of these" are invited to this country. There are no exceptions listed here. No exclusions.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran minister who spent the final eight years of Germany's Third Reich in the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps, explained how the Holocaust could happen:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
I am an American. As an American I must not silence the Donald Trumps of this country. No matter how strongly I disagree with what he says, our Constitution protects his right to say it. And I support that protection. Let him speak.
BUT I must say that I disagree! I must encourage the quiet and courteous among us to say out loud that they also disagree. I must spur the otherwise-engaged to pay attention and speak out. We cannot sit by and let the hurt or angry or fearful determine the political discourse of this Nation. Nor, indeed, the political course of this Nation.
WE, not people like him, are why this Nation is Great. We must speak out.
I hope there are lots more who think like you. Still worrying though. Not an original thought - but doesn't it ever occur to them that they are immigrants too?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it's that we live in Colorado, or the people we tend to socialize with, but my daughter and I were talking today and neither of us actually knows anyone who supports Trump. Even with all the brouhaha from the news folk about Trump leading the polls, in Florida he's still only polling 42 percent of Republicans. Florida has a closed Republican Primary which means that only registered Republicans can vote in it. Republicans in Florida make up 17.5 percent of the registered voters. That tells me that Trump is expected to get 42% of 17.5%. That's a grand total of 7.35% of the total registered electorate in Florida. Not nearly as impressive or threatening when you look at the numbers. And you're quite right, we are all immigrants. Even Native Americans are descendants of peoples believed to have migrated from Asia across the Bering Strait some 15 thousand years ago plus.
ReplyDeleteJ here, stopping by from the #atozchallenge - where I am part of Arlee Bird's A to Z Ambassador Team.
ReplyDeleteApril should be exciting. I'm looking forward to the event. Best of luck to us both on meeting our goals of posting and hopping to other blogs.
My blog has a giveaway. There's a bonus a to z challenge each day to encourage people to visit more stops.

I'm glad that you're speaking out. Equality and fair treatment only survive if good people make it so, not just wish it or dream it.
Don't forget to put your A to Z 2016 badge up. See you on Friday!
